Running is an activity that many people enjoy for the purposes of fitness, weight loss, and in some cases socialization.  It's a great way to get outdoors and get your body moving.  While some people prefer the solitude and serenity that running can provide, others may get bored going solo.

The good news is that you needn't go it alone.  Whether you're just starting out, you've been jogging for fun and fitness for years, or you're ready to train for a race, joining a running club can not only give you the opportunity to meet other like-minded fitness enthusiasts, but it can provide you with myriad benefits.

We're forming an online community to help motivate you too Join our 30 Day Running Challenge!

Running Club

If running alone is too dull for your tastes or you need a running buddy to boost your motivation, joining a running club could be just what you need to get moving.  Here are a few great reasons to find and join a local running club in your area.

  1. Companionship

There are certainly advantages to working out alone, such as the ability to plan your exercise around your schedule and keep workout times flexible.  As a runner, you can also choose where you want to run, whether it's on a treadmill at the gym or around the park near your house.

Unfortunately, jogging the same old trails by yourself can get pretty dull after a while, even with the bouncing beats of Lady Gaga or Pitbull and Kesha to get you going.  You might find yourself running slower, logging fewer miles, and generally feeling less motivated to run after a while.

One of the best reasons to join a running club is to find some companions to jog with.  If your friends laugh in your face or make excuses when you ask them to jog with you, it's time to find some new friends that already enjoy running and are interested in the same thing you are - a running buddy.

  1. Advice

As a solo runner, you can find endless amounts of advice for runners online, from what to wear, to how to avoid injury, to tips for staying hydrated and nourished for endurance running.  What you might not know is how to choose the best advice.

Joining a running club gives you access to runners with all kinds of personal experience.  These people can help you to understand what worked for them so you can better determine what will work best for you.

  1. Find New Running Locations

It's easy to get bored when your course never changes.  Plus, your body will eventually become accustomed to running the same route.  At some point you'll need a new challenge if you want to continue improving your performance.

Running clubs may meet at a variety of locations and provide members with mapped courses, often with different options for level of difficulty (since runners are at different levels of fitness and ability).  This means you can get the variety you've been craving and find fun new jogging trails in your area.

  1. Support and Motivation

Running can be a rather demanding sport, and finding the motivation to keep it up on your own is definitely a struggle at times.  Having a strong support network of other runners that want to see you succeed is a great motivating force.  Plus, running with friends can make the experience a lot more fun so it seems more like a treat than a chore.

  1. Structure and Accountability

When you set your own running schedule, it's all too easy to let other obligations get in the way and take priority.  With a running club, you're on someone else's schedule and people will expect you to show up.  This added structure and accountability could help you to stick to a set schedule.

  1. Join Races

Some people are perfectly capable of training for a 5K, 10K, marathon, or other race on their own.  Others need some help in order to prepare for a race, especially if they've never done it before.

If you fall into the latter camp, a running club can not only give you the 411 on the best upcoming races in your area, but the members of your club can help you to train appropriately for any race you want to sign up for.
